Conditions

We can help with:

ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder where children are very active, have difficulty concentrating and are impulsive. It starts in early childhood and can present in a variety of ways.  We offer a highly specialist and thorough assessment followed by treatment options tailored to the child’s individual needs which may include behavioural interventions, school interventions, therapy and medication.

Anxiety

When a child suffers from anxiety it can make family life extremely stressful. Anxiety also has a tendency to grow so it is important that it is tackled early on. We will help you and your child understand the feelings and behaviour associated with anxiety.  We will work with you to treat the symptoms with therapeutic approaches, school based adjustments where relevant and in more severe or longstanding presentations medication may be an additional option which can be considered.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Children with autism spectrum disorders can encounter difficulties secondary to problems with communication, social interaction and repetitive behaviours and interests.  Children with autistic spectrum disorders may present in a variety of ways and if you are concerned about this, we can undertake a detailed multidisciplinary assessment to fully understand your child’s needs. There are various treatment options involving a combination of approaches individually tailored to the patient's needs

Bereavement

The loss of a significant other can be difficult to cope with and a young person may present with a range of difficulties. A member of our team can support and help the young person come to terms with their loss.

Challenging Behaviour

Sometimes behaviour can become very challenging, the child/young person can find themselves quickly switching from calm to anger. There are various approaches that can be helpful for parents/carers, teachers and children/young people themselves in supporting them in learning how to manage their emotions and modify their behaviours.

Coping with physical symptoms/illness/disability

If a young person has a physical illness or disability we can help to support them. When a family member has a disability or serious illness, the effect on themselves and on other members of the family can be significant. Siblings may struggle to understand their own feelings and the dynamics of the family can change. We can offer support to the whole family and also to any child or young person who may be needing some individual space.

Depression /Low Mood

Low mood is a common feature of adolescence. However when it begins to impact on functioning whether it be at school or socially, it is important that an assessment and then treatment occurs. Depression can also occur in younger children and this requires careful assessment. An assessment will enable us to clarify whether the young person needs help or whether it falls within the range of normal development.  Treatments for depression include therapy and medications in some instances.

OCD

Obsessional compulsive disorder can be a debilitating condition that can take many forms. It can present by constant checking or hand washing. The child has learnt that a behaviour or thought reduces an uncomfortable feeling so the disorder becomes entrenched. There needs to be a thorough assessment and then a variety of treatments will be considered such as CBT, family work and or medication.

Parenting

It can be very difficult and challenging to be a parent. Today there are additional pressures placed on children whether they be academic or via social media. We are able to provide consultations, a time and space to reflect and think about these challenges and to advise and think about how to proceed.

Phobias

Phobias occur when a fear becomes irrationally large and it interferes with normal functioning. For example a phobia of wasps can lead to not going out in the summer or a fear of dogs can lead to running in the road. A phobia can take many forms and can range in severity. The usual treatment for a phobia is a desensitisation programme done very slowly at a pace the child is comfortable with.

Trauma

Experience of trauma can cause PTSD, anxiety, phobias, flashbacks and nightmares. Psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), EMDR and other talking therapies can be beneficial in overcoming symptoms. Sometimes medication can be helpful.
